Production system based global livestock sector modeling: Good news for the future AgEcon
Havlik, Petr; Herrero, Mario; Mosnier, Aline; Obersteiner, Michael; Schmid, Erwin; Fuss, Sabine; Schneider, Uwe A..
Livestock is recognized as one of the major drivers of current and future global change. This is caused on the production side, by the substantial resource requirements (land and water) per unit of output, and the related greenhouse gas emissions, and on the consumption side, by the growing demand due to population and economic growth. Our paper investigates whether productivity gains which enabled to the crop sector to satisfy the increased demand under decreasing real prices, and with little additional land, in the past decades, can be expected in the livestock sector in the future. To answer this question, we implement the recursively dynamic partial equilibrium bottom-up model of the global agriculture and forest sectors (GLOBIOM), expanded by a newly...

Productivity Growth and Convergence in Crop, Ruminant and Non-Ruminant Production: Measurement and Forecasts AgEcon
Ludena, Carlos E.; Hertel, Thomas W.; Preckel, Paul V.; Foster, Kenneth A.; Nin Pratt, Alejandro.
There is considerable interest in projections of future productivity growth in agriculture. Whether one is interested in the outlook for global commodity markets, future patterns of international trade, or the interactions between land use, deforestation and ecological diversity, the rate of productivity growth in agriculture is an essential input. Yet solid projections for this variable have proven elusive – particularly on a global basis. This is due, in no small part, to the difficulty in measuring historical productivity growth. The purpose of this paper is to report the latest time series evidence on total factor productivity growth for crops, ruminants and non-ruminant livestock, on a global basis. We then follow with tests for convergence amongst...

Prospects of Feed Crops in Malaysia AgEcon
Yahya, Tunku Mahmud Bin Tunku; Sukir, Sarmin Bin.
The study was initiated with the objectives of elucidating and analyzing potentials, weaknesses, opportunities, constraints and policy options in the development of feed crop farming with an emphasis on secondary crops in Southeast Asian developing countries. In Malaysia, feed crops currently not much to employment, income generation, import substitution and export promotion because the sub-sector is small. The scope of the study is limited to the dominant non-ruminant sector of the livestock industry. This sector, particularly poultry and swine, has not only experienced rapid growth but also produces more than is required for domestic consumption and thus exports to neighbouring countries.

Provision of Livestock as a Catalyst for Improved Income Generation on Small Farms in Western Kenya AgEcon
Juma, Alfred; Roberts, Tim.
Many of the Groups supported had humble origins. Some were originally formed by women who got together because of their desperate situation and started 'merry go rounds' by which they each contributed a small amount of money each month and then supported members in turn either in a crisis situation or for a particular need - eg school fees. As they developed self confidence and improved their well being in a small way, so ngos such as SACHKWR have been able to build on their strengths and support them in the next step towards self sustainability. The challenge now is to ensure that as SACHKWR move on and support other communities that they are able to continue on their own with the minimum of outside support. To this end it is hoped that one of the SACHKWR...

Reconciling cattle ranching and environmental conservation in the Legal Brazilian Amazon. Infoteca-e
VALENTIM, J. F.; ANDRADE, C. M. S. de; BARIONI, L. G..
The Legal Brazilian Amazon is a region with growing economic, social and environmental relevance in the national and international scenarios. With a cattle heard above 70 million heads and an area of native and cultivated pastures above 61 million hectares cattle ranching has been one of the main focus of the debate regarding the sustainable development of the Region In the last 30 years, gains in productivity avoided need for incorporation of 147.5 million hectares of the biomes Cerrado and Amazon to the cattle production systems in the Legal Amazon to meet the current world demand for meat. Studies conducted at farm level in the State of Acre show that improved mixed grass-legume pastures with grass species of the genera Braquiaria or Panicum and the...

Recuperação, melhoramento e manejo de pastagens no Acre: resultados de pesquisa e informações práticas. Infoteca-e

Remittances, Income Distribution, and Rural Asset Accumulation AgEcon
Adams, Richard H., Jr..
This paper examines the direct, first-rounds impact of two types of remittances—internal and external remittances—on income distribution and asset accumulation in rural Pakistan. Using income decomposition techniques on a three-year panel household data set, the paper finds that internal remittances have a positive effect on equity and that external remittances have a negative effect. The study also uses an asset-accumulation model to pinpoint the effect of remittances on five types of rural assets: irrigated land owned, rainfed land owned, livestock assets, agricultural capital, and nonfarm assets. The results show that remittances do have an effect on rural asset accumulation. While external remittances have a positive and significant effect on the...

Sheep faeces decomposition and nutrient release across an environmental gradient in Southern Patagonia Ecología austral
Bahamonde,Héctor A; Gargaglione,Verónica; Peri,Pablo L.
In Southern Patagonia, most of the land ranging from the mountains to the sea in contrasting environmental conditions is devoted to extensive sheep farming. Existing estimations indicate that in ecosystems under livestock use, around 85% of the nitrogen (N) returning to the soil is through animal feces and urine. However, there is a lack of information concerning the rate of nutrient return into the soil from animal feces in Southern Patagonia. In this study, we evaluated the rate of sheep faeces decomposition and nutrient (N, P, Ca and K) release in three different ecological areas of Southern Pat agonia, representing a West to East environmental gradient. Samples of fresh sheep dung were collected in the field, processed in the laboratory and located in...

Infoteca-e
ABREU, U. G. P. de; BERGIER, I.; COSTA, F. P.; OLIVEIRA, L. O. F. de; NOGUEIRA, E.; SILVA, J. C. B.; BATISTA, D. S. do N.; SILVA JUNIOR, C..
Identificar...
